Geographically, the properties can be located on the cartographic sheet of the I.G.N. OROSI No. 3149-III between the CRTM05 coordinates: - Cacao Farm: horizontal 346324, 348280 and vertical 1216006, 1214729 - Del Medio Farm: horizontal 348035, 347550 and vertical 1217124, 1216980. The farms are situated 8.2 km southeast and 4 km southwest of the town of Santa Cecilia.

Size and access to Forestry lands in Costa Rica

The Cacao Farm is the largest, with a total registered area of 55.012590 ha. Del Medio Farm has a total registered area of 9.2417 ha. Access to the farms is via National Route No. 4 (North Atlantic Corridor) on a paved road up to the town of Santa Cecilia. From there, one continues 5.7 km on a gravel road toward Upala, then takes a detour toward the Las Brumas community, continuing 7.5 km on a dirt road that is passable throughout the year.

Environmental value of these Forestry and Timber properties

Our plantations, over 20 years old, are located in the northwestern corner of Costa Rica, bordering Guanacaste National Park. Part of our vision has been to contribute to an ecological corridor that connects the Pacific Ocean with Lake Nicaragua and the Atlantic Rainforest, thus linking three distinct ecosystems. This is a high-value forestry project, focused on the production of “gourmet” timber species with strong conservation value, based on the rehabilitation of forest ecosystems.

The sustainability of your new forestry investment also considers the future potential income from ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration, water production, biodiversity, and scenic beauty. The project also offers excellent opportunities for ecotourism, scientific tourism, education, and research. The forest serves as a school and research site, hosting university students conducting research projects and receiving both undergraduate and graduate groups in forestry sciences.

Costa Rican Farm and Forestry property surrounding assets

Your new farms are surrounded by lush natural forests rich in biodiversity and bordering the Guanacaste National Park. Birds (such as toucans) and mammals (such as tapirs) help disperse many high-value species of the tropical rain and dry forests.

Costa Rican Tree farm business model for the future

These Costa Rican projects began with the establishment of forest plantations under a different scheme than those traditionally used in Costa Rica. It was designed to recreate the dynamics of a natural forest, where pioneer species prepare the site for subsequent ones, maintaining the Costa Rican ecological richness that comes from a diverse mix of forest species—which also benefits local fauna. The natural forests within the farms were protected and conserved from the beginning.

Like many properties in the region, the farms were initially used for cattle ranching and agricultural crops, which were later abandoned due to low productivity caused by soil degradation and economic factors. Currently, these farms have been reforested with a mixture of native and exotic species under a mixed system.

These Forestry properties in Costa Rica are a mix of biodiversity

The simplicity of traditional forest plantations, compared to the diversity of tropical natural forests, can be addressed through ecologically diverse and sustainable plantation designs. Mixed plantations can develop a dynamic and structure similar to natural forests by incorporating species from different ecological guilds, fulfilling complementary ecological functions. These designs combine native and exotic species of fast, medium, and slow growth, along with natural regeneration management of other forest species. Mixed plantations promote greater biodiversity regeneration by creating a variety of habitats that favor seed dispersers, germination, and growth of numerous species. Species selection has been crucial, based on growth dynamics and shade tolerance, to ensure that no species is suppressed.

The plantations are composed of heliophilous, durable heliophilous, and sciophilous species, organized in layers according to ecological requirements. Depending on composition, either even-aged or uneven-aged structures were pursued. Through photosynthesis, these plantations provide not only carbon fixation and storage, but also scenic beauty, soil and water protection, biodiversity, and climate regulation.

Forest plantation establishment began in 2003 with species such as Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) and Cedar (Cedrela odorata). In the following two years, many other species were added, including: Acacia mangium (Acacia), Araucaria hunsteinii (Klinki), Astronium graveolens (RonRon), Brosimum alicastrum (Ojoche), Calophyllum Brasiliense (María), Carapa guianensis (Caobilla), Ceiba pentandra (Ceiba), Cespedecia macrophylla (Tabacón), Cordia alliodora (Laurel), Dalbergia retusa (Cocobolo), Diphysa americana (Guachipelín), Dipteryx panamensis (Almendro), Dialium guianensis (Tamarindo), Enterolobium cyclocarpum (Guanacaste), Hieronyma alchorneoides (Pilón), Hymenaea courbaril (Guapinol), Jacaranda copaia (Paraíso), Manilkara chicle (Nispero), Minquartia guianensis (Manú), Penthacletra macroloba (Gavilán), Platymiscium parviflorum (Cachimbo), Platymiscium pinnatum (Cristóbal), Persea spp (Aguacatillo), Samanea saman (Cenízaro), Simaruba glauca (Aceituno), Schizolobium parahyba (Gallinazo), Sclerobium costarricense (Tostado), Spondias mombin (Jobo), Tabebuia guayacan (Cortez Amarillo), Tabebuia rosea (Roble Sabana), Terminalia amazonia (Roble Coral), Virola koschnyii koschnyii (Fruta Dorada), Vochysia ferruginea (Botarrama), Vochysia guatemalensis (San Juan), and Zanthoxylum kellermanii (Lagarto).

All these species produce highly valued timber for various uses, and some yield fine, endangered woods in certain regions.

Investment value of your Tree Farm and forestry property

Investing in these farms means acquiring an asset that combines: - Forestry profitability: valuable timber under sustainable management practices. - Environmental services income: carbon credits and environmental service payments (PSA). - Tourism and recreation potential: ideal for eco-lodges, hiking, and conservation activities. - Heritage security: productive and protected land in one of the country’s most dynamic regions.

Your Tree farm and forestry properties care and control

The forestry engineer, Ph.D. Guillermo Navarro Monge, is the professional responsible for issuing the guidelines for proper forest management. Plantations on both properties require systematic weed control to promote proper vertical growth. Inspections and fieldwork are carried out by local workers in each sector of the farms, following the schedule assigned by the engineer. Pruning is performed as needed to improve tree form and timber quality. Growth and development of each species are analyzed to determine thinning patterns that ensure spatial balance and prevent competition, thus optimizing growth of the best specimens. In addition to weed control, the firebreak lines—especially along property boundaries—are regularly inspected and maintained. Fences are checked, and necessary repairs are carried out.
